A spokesman of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Rajeev Chandran said “the 7th billion child was born in Uttar Pradesh. However there are token celebrations in The Philippines as they are of the view that the 7th billion child was born there.”

China tops the race with 20% of world’s population. India is at number two with 18% of the global population. The US comes next with 5%, Indonesia 4% and Brazil stands at fifth position with 3% of the total population. The last country in the race is Vatican City with a population of just 800 people.

According to UN projections, the population of India is expected to touch 1.5 billion and supercede that of China by 2025 and population stabilization is the need of hour. It is a matter of great concern for India which hosts 18% of world’s population on 2.4% of global land area.

A UN report looks at the 7 billion milestone as a sign of people living longer and improved birth survival rates. However some experts say, the UN report displays the disparities between countries.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for unity of purpose among people across nations to address problems of climate change, economic crisis and inequality. In his message he said, global problems demand global solutions. He appealed all nations to build a more just, tolerant and inclusive world. UNFPA has urged the global community to seize the opportunity and invest in health and education of youth.
