Abdullah who is camping in Delhi since two day met the Prime Minister on Monday has suggested that AFSPA can be removed from Srinagar and Budgam besides Jammu city and Sambha where “normalcy has been restored.”.
According to sources his meeting with the Prime Minister last for about 30 minutes. They discussed security-related issues in the state and there was no assurance for revoking AFSPA from parts of the state..
After his meeting with Singh, Omar met the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
Speaking to mediapersons after meeting the Union Home Minister, Abdullah said : I am trying to work out a middle path to address the concerns of Army and aspirations of the people.” However, Abdullah asserted that the separatists were not in favour of removal of AFSPA as they were being benefited from both the sides.
The meeting with the Prime Minister comes a day after Omar had discussions with Defence Minister AK Antony and Army Chief V K Singh to press for early removal of the AFSPA from certain parts of the state.
Speaking to mediapersons the after presenting awards to defence scientists and organisations on Friday, Antony said : “I had a frank and fruitful discussions with the J&K Chief Minister on Saturday on the issue of removal of AFSPA from certain parts of the state, but the discussions remained inconclusive.”
He further said : “it is a very sensitive issue. Nothing has been settled so far. Discussions on the issue is continuing within the government. No time limit can set for it before a decision is reached.”
In reply to a query on the status of security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Antony said that it has improved but infiltrations were still continuing.
While Antony conveyed the reservations of the Army over such a move, Abdullah emphasised the need to translate the promises made by the National Conference-Congress alliance on ground and reward the people of the state for maintaining a peaceful year.
Abdullah had noted that the state has seen a boom in the tourism industry with nearly 13 lakh tourists visiting it till October this year.
The Army has voiced its serious reservations over withdrawal of AFSPA from certain parts citing security concerns.
Abdullah also met the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the issue.
