The Joint Working Group (JWG) discussed the implementation of the agreement on demarcation of land boundary and exchange of 162 adversely-held enclaves on both sides which was agreed upon during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh to Dhaka in September, this year. It also discussed other issues

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096km land boundary covering five states- West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram.

Border management, human trafficking, smuggling of narcotics and other goods, infiltration of illegal immigrants, police-to-police cooperation in capacity building, cooperation to combat terrorism are also be discussed during the secretary level talks between the two countries.

In the secretary level talks the Indian side will be led by Home Secretary, RK Singh while the Bangladesh side will be led by Monzur Hussain.

Reports of extremists outfits active in India seeking refuge in Bangladesh is a grave concern for the Indian side. The Indian side may press for early deportation of ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia, who is in a Dhaka jail following his arrest in 1997 on the charge of entering Bangladesh without valid documents. Chetia has sought asylum in Bangladesh and refused to return to India even after his jail term ended there, alleging a threat to his life.
