The former Bangladesh Prime Minister and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Begum Khaleda Zia, who is on a visit to India, called on the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh an Monday and discussed a variety of issues relating to bilateral relations. The meeting was very cordial and lasted approximately for 30 minutes.

Khaleda Zia was very appreciative of various Indian initiatives which had been taken by the Prime Minister including liberalization of trade, efforts to provide power etc. She also expressed satisfaction at the manner in which India is working out issues related to Tipaimukh Dam and matters on border management including deaths on the border.

With Begum Khaleda approving and appreciating India’s initiatives on basis of the agreement signed between Dr Singh and the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2010 lends hope that India-Bangladesh relations will continue to remain on track in the near future.

According to official sources, both the leaders felt that terrorism a of great concern and agreed to continue cooperation on terrorism and insurgent groups.

Dr Singh said that India was willing to discuss all issues of importance to Bangladesh. He mentioned that he always believed that the prosperity of India’s neighbours, particularly Bangladesh, is in India’s interest. He also emphasized that India is committed to a close and deeper relationship with Bangladesh.
