It would be worth mentioning here that the Samajwadi Party had extended support to the Congress-led UPA government from outside.
The relations between the Samajwadi Party and Congress have touched so low that SP national president Mulayam Singh Yadav is threatening to withdraw the support at an appropriate time.
It has become a routine for the SP national president Mulayam Singh Yadav to criticize the UPA government in general, and Congress in particular, during his daily sermons to party workers at the party headquarters in Lucknow.
Mulayam Singh Yadav is very critical of UPA government for misusing the CBI in his disproportionate case pending in Supreme Court.
Yadav also blames the UPA government for inflation and total mismanagement in governance in the country and failure to look after the requirement of states.
SP national president was so censorious of the Congress that he opined that it had become a family affair of Nehru-Gandhi family.
Mulayam Singh Yadav often disapproves of the UPA government for large-scale corruption in the country during the last nine years of its rule.
The dream of Mulayam Singh Yadav is to become the Prime Minister of India, should people vote for a hung parliament, and should his party is able to get more then 50 seats.
Mulayam Singh Yadav has been telling his party workers to ensure 50 to 70 seats in Lok Sabha to make him bag the coveted post.
Mulayam’s chief minister son Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the UPA government for its step-motherly treatment to UP.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that the centre was being biased against UP’s need for infrastructure development, particularly in the context of road-building by National Highways Authority of India. Although there is a four-lane highway from Lucknow to Rae Bareili (Sonia’s constituency), after that the roads become really bad, meriting immediate reconstruction.
The recent expansion of the Akhilesh Yadav ministry also points out that the Samajwadi Party was serious to take on the Congress in those constituencies, which were considered to be safe for the party leaders.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has picked up MLAs from those areas in his ministry where Congress has the maximum number of MPs in Lok Sabha.
Although Mulayam Singh Yadav has announced that party would not field candidates against Mrs Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareili, there has been no such announcement about Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.
Few months back, when senior party leader Ram Gopal released the list of party candidates, there was no mention about Rae Bareili and Amethi.
On the other hand, newly appointed AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi launched attack on Akhilesh Yadav government for not fulfilling election promises during his recent visit to Amethi. Rahul said that the SP government had done nothing for local people, despite promises to distribute of laptops, PCs, unemployment dole and Kanya Vidya Dhan.
Rahul Gandhi, during his two-day stay in his constituency, addressed a series of rallies and party workers’ meeting, and the main focus was on criticizing the SP government for corruption and ignoring central schemes and lack of development in the state.
The political observers opine that Mulayam Singh Yadav is also worried about the manner in which BJP has been promoting Gujarat CM Modi as the PM candidate, the minorities would be polarised in favour of Congress, which was national party and could form the government once again in 2014.
