India and Thailand are expected to sign a number of documents and announce new initiatives.

During the last visit of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to India in January 2012, when she was the Chief Guest, Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) in criminal matter and an agreement on transfer of sentenced persons were signed. It is likely, this time, the two countries would sign a Extradition Treaty on the two-day visit of the Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to Bangkok from May 30.

India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway project has made good progress and is expected to be completed by 2016.

The newly constituted India-Thailand Joint Working Group on Connectivity and Infrastructure, which met for the first time in September 2012, has focused on initiatives in third countries including exploring possibilities for cooperation in Dawei deep sea port in Myanmar and connectivity to Lao and Cambodia. India and Thailand have an excellent air connectivity with 138 flights per week. Last year as many as 1.16 million Indian tourists visited Thailand.

Keeping in line with agreements on security and defence, the India and Thailand have a broad-based engagement, including training programmes, joint military exercises, anti-piracy operations, maintenance of security of sea lanes and exchange of visits of Defence personnel.

Later this year Indian Defence Minister AK Antony is expected to visit Thailand with a view to firm up this relationship.

India and Thailand signed a framework agreement on free trade area (FTA) in 2003 followed by a early harvest FTA in 2004. Bilateral trade has reached the level of $9.2 billion in 2012-13 and the growth in two-way investment has been impressive. India will raise the issue of a comprehensive and balanced outcome in the ongoing FTA negotiations.

India and Thailand are likely to sign agreements to expand expanding cooperation in science and technology, including Information, Communication Technology (ICT), space applications and R&D.

Prime Minister Dr Singh is likely to discuss with his Thai counterpart, the progress in setting up of Nalanda University. India is planning a major exhibition on Buddhist art in Bangkok sometimes later in coordination with the Kolkata based Indian Museum.

The two prime ministers are slated to discuss cooperation in fora like ASEAN, ARF, EAS, BIMSTEC, MGC, UN.
