The BSP supremo Mayawati, who revived bhaichara samiti for Brahmins, has set a target of 32 meetings all over the state to create awareness in Brahmin community.

Mayawati believes that if her party was able to revive the magic in 2007, when majority of Brahmins had voted for BSP, then she could repeat the feat in 2014 and get the desirable number of seats.

BSP supremo is once again depending on Satish Mishra MP, who is the Brahmin face of the party, to reach out to the community through meetings.

At every Brahmin bhaichara samity meeting in different parts of the state, Satish Mishra has been assuring about sharing of power by BSP if voted to power.

Satish Mishra has been telling the Brahmins that if they, who account for 16 per cent of the voters, decided to vote for a BSP candidate, then with the help of 24 per cent votes of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe, the combined votes would ensure victory in all the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the BSP’s favour.

In order to give example about power sharing, Satish Mishra gives his own example that Mayawati trusted him so much that he was virtually number two position in the party and enjoyed maximum clout.

Mishra said that there were other Brahmin leaders in the party who too were recognised by Mayawati, as she gave them respect and position in the party and the government.

Satish Mishra warned Brahmins that they should be aware of the ‘conspiracy’ of Samajwadi Party to isolate them, politically and socially.

There is feeling within BSP that at a time when it was losing support from the backward party and most backward communities, the support from Brahmins was crucial.

Bahujan Samaj Party has given 30 tickets to Brahmins out of total 80 Lok Sabha seats for the 2014 polls.

Political analyst Surendra Rajput says that over the period of time, BSP has lost support from powerful backward communities like Kushwaha and Bind, Rajbhar, Patels and Nishads. This loss was reflected in poor show in 2012 assembly polls.

Rajput maintains that ever since the BSP supremo removed Babur Singh Kushwaha, undisputed leader of his community, along with other prominent backward leaders from the party, Mayawati’s desperation for Brahmins has increased.

Recently, Babur Singh Kushwaha demonstrated his strength in Lucknow through a successful rally while he was still in jail for alleged corruption charges.

Surendra Rajput said that BSP’s founder Kanshiram had formed the party as the umbrella of dalits and backwards and especially most backwards, which gave good results but after his death Mayawati could not prevent disintegration of the party.

So much so, that the powerful Pasi community and its leader RK Choudhry, too, had left the party and joined hand with Congress. Mayawati’s desperation saw re-entry of Pasi leader RK Choudhry in the party recently. (IPA)
