India will also discuss with Brunei leaders about supply of more petroleum oil. India imports about $ 2 billion worth of petroleum from Brunei.

Discussion will be on boosting India-ASEAN trade to the level of $100 billion by 2015 from the existing level of $79 billion and also on early conclusion of the negotiations on Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership between ASEAN and its FTApartners.

The Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is leaving on Sunday for Brunei for the 11th India-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, 3rd East Asia Summit Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers and the 20th ASEAN Regional Forum Meeting.

The expected visit of the Vietnamese Foreign Minister to India shortly is slated to give a further boost to India’s engagement with South-East Asia. Next month a Joint Commission meeting between India and Vietnam will be hosted in Delhi.

India is examining the possibility of establishing additional English language centres in Cambodia, Lao and Vietnam.

In the East Asia Summit Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers, Brunei as the chair has proposed two new initiatives relating to food security and setting up a track-2 study group. India will updating the member countries about the progress made at Nalanda University and solicit their support.

In the 20th ASEAN Regional Forum issues like counterterrorism. organised crime, maritime security, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, preventive diplomacy, peace building and matters relating to developments in North Korea, South China Sea and Afghanistan will be discussed.

Khurshid is slated to have bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Brunei, Indonesia, Australia, China and Bangladesh and several other countries.

After completing his engagements in Brunei, the Indian External Affairs Minister will visit Singapore on July 3. He will discuss with his Singaporean counterpart about the proposed celebration of the 50th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations in 2014-15.

India’s trade with Singapore is the highest among ASEAN countries and Singapore’s investment in India during the last decade is estimated by various sources to be about 10% of the FDI flows to India.

Khurshid is slated to deliver a talk on – India and South-East Asia : Today and Tomorrow – at the Institute of South Asian Studies. he is expected to meet the Prime Minister of Singapore, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security.

He will chair the regional meeting of the Heads of Indian Missions in ASEAN, Pacific and East Asia. He will interact with the Indian community in Singapore.

At present India has 25 mechanisms of various sorts which underpin our interaction with ASEAN. These include six at Ministerial level. The Ministerial level interactions are: foreign affairs, trade, agriculture, tourism, environment, and new and renewable energy.

India-ASEAN people-to-people interaction too has been at a fairly intense pace. This year too it is expected that 250 ASEAN students would visit India. In addition, 20 ASEAN journalists had visited earlier this year, and 20 more will be visiting later this year. Eight Indian journalists, under media programme, are now on a visit to Kuala Lumpur, en route to Brunei.
