The US Vice President is arriving here on Monday for a four-day visit accompanied by his spouse Jill Biden.

On his arrival he visit Gandhi Smriti Darshan.

Biden will discuss with his counterpart Vice President of India Hamid Ansari and the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Tuesday. He will call upon the President of India Pranab Mukherjee, while the Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj will call on him.

According to sources, Biden will plead with Indian leaders for further opening up its retail sector for foreign direct investment (FDI), bring changes in the laws to recognize and respect patents rights granted by US Patent Office and other patent offices across the globe, give adequate protection to American investments in India and the need for a stable and predictable tax regime.

Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma was in US last week lobbying with the law makers to relax the stringent provisions of the Comprehensive Immigration Bill which restricts the movement of skilled professionals.

While India has allowed benefits to American companies under Transfer Pricing and relaxed FDI norms in some crucial sectors US has still to reciprocate by easing norms for movement skill Indian professionals.

Captains of the US industry also met the two Indian ministers.

In fact after the return of two ministers from US, India relaxed its FDI norms in petroleum and natural gas and refining, commodity exchanges, power exchanges, stock exchanges, asset reconstruction, credit information companies, single brand retailing, basic and cellular phone services, courier services, tea companies and civil aviation.

In Defence sector, India has allowed FDI in higher range for state-of-the-art technology subject to the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Security.

In the insurance sector 49% FDI will be allowed subject to the approval by the Parliament.

US is interested in India opening up its insurance, defence and multi brand retailing adequately to attract FDIs

Biden is also likely to discuss with Indian leaders and seek India’s help in US policy on rebalancing in Asia-Pacific, Defence cooperation is also on the agenda for discussion.

He will also discuss with Indian leaders on the future of Afghanistan.

While Biden will be discussing with Indian leaders on Tuesday, his spouse will make a trip to Agra to do a health and nutrition event among Kachhupura community and visit Taj Mahal.

Biden is slated to address the Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai on Wednesday and hold a roundtable with business leaders. He will also hold a women’s empowerment event at the Indian Institute of Technology, before emplaning for Singapore.
