Mayawati has now realised that there has been dent in her Dalit vote bank, as substantial number of Dalits have voted for BJP to make Narendra Modi as prime minister.

Especially in western UP, where there was complete communal polarisation after Muzaffarnagar communal riots, there was shift of pet BSP votes in favour of BJP.

During his visit to Varanasi, Badhoi and Allahabad, this reporter noticed that traditional BSP voters had made up their mind to vote for BJP to help Narendra Modi become PM.

Dalits voters told this reporter that they would prefer Mayawati to become chief minister but would not to waste their vote in Lok Sabha polls as national issues were involved.

The core voters of BSP are also upset with BSP supremo Mayawati for giving so many seats to upper caste people in the name of social engineering.

The political analysts opine that this time Mayawati may not get votes from upper castes as well for her support to quota within quota, which unnerved the upper-caste employees.

Mayawati has played aggressive Brahmin card with 21 tickets to this important community under the influence of her close lieutenant Satish Mishra, MP.

With increase in anger in her core voters over her preference to Muslims and upper caste candidates, Mayawati has now realised that her upper caste candidate may not get substantial support that is why she is now banking on Muslim community.

In her recent election meetings, Mayawati not only launched attack on Narendra Modi, but also appealed to Muslim community to ensure victory of 19 Muslim candidates of BSP for balance of power at the centre and make her the prime minister.

Mayawati is also unnerved by the fact that against all earlier reports, Muslims voted for Samajwadi Party candidates in western UP and other parts of the state. There was earlier speculation that Muslim community was angry with Samajwadi Party for mishandling of Muzaffarnagar riots,

Now Mayawati is talking about Godhra killings and communal riots in Gujarat during period of Narendra Modi and blamed Samajwadi party in UP for not giving justice to murder of Deputy SP Haq and protection to his killers.

Mayawati has all the reasons to worry as her grip in reserved constituencies is on decline since 2007.She came to power in 2007 with the help of winning in as many as 62 reserved constituency out of total 89 while Samajwadi Party could get only 13.

But the decline began in 2009 when BSP won only two reserved constituencies out of total 17 reserved Lok Sabha constituencies in UP. The vote share also came down to only 27 per cent.

Again 2012 assembly polls there was decline in BSP’s fortune as there as erosion in dalit votes beside Muslims and most backwards and Mayawati could win 15 out of total 85 reserved constituencies.

Mayawati is passing through difficult time and only future will tell whether her policy of sarvjan hitai and sarvjan sukhai playing social engineering will pay rich dividends in 2014 Lok Sabha polls or not. (IPA)
