According to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 247 communal riots, which killed 77 people and injured 360, followed by Maharashtra 88 communal strifes, 12 deaths and 352 injuries, Madhya Pradesh 84 communal riots, 11 deaths and 256 injuries, Karnataka 73 communal riots, one death and 235 injuries, Gujarat 68 communal riots, 10 deaths and 184 injuries, Bihar 63 communal riots, seven deaths and 283 injuries, Kerala 41 communal riots, one death and 65 injuries, Tamil Nadu 36 communal riots, three deaths and 85 injuries, and West Bengal 24 communal riots, one death and 80 injuries.
Other States and Union Territory that had communal riots included Andhra Pradesh 15 communal incidents and 65 injuries, Jharkhand 12 communal riots, two deaths and 35 injuries, Jammu & Kashmir four communal riots, three deaths and 61 injuries, Chhattisgarh three communal riots and one injury, Odisha three communal riots, one death and nil injury, Uttarakhand three communal riots, two deaths and nil injury, Punjab two communal riots, Goa one communal riot and three injuries and the National Capital Territory of Delhi two communal riots and three injuries.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs maintains that in view of the Public Order and Police being State subject as per the Schedule Seventh of the Constitution of India, States and Union Territories are primarily responsible for law and order situation in their jurisdiction. The Union Government comes in the picture by way of enforcement with Central Para Military Forces, Armed Forces and other forms of assistance to help States maintain law and order, should the situation so require.
The Union Home Ministry revealed that the over all situations across the country remained under control and peace prevailed.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies kept strict vigil and watch over anti-social elements, fundamentalists, religious bigots, extremists and communal forces to quell any violence and maintain peace and national integration.

India witnessed 823 communal riots across the country during 2013 in which 133 people were killed and 2269 persons injured.
