There are six Central Forensic Science Laboratories across the country. A Chief Forensic Scientist oversees their functioning. He reviews regularly the technology used in these laboratories to ensure adoption of latest technology in crime detection and investigation.

Officials of the Central Forensic Science Laboratories are periodically detailed for training and updating their skills in the use of special equipment and training to keep pace with the ever-changing crime profile.

As for the State level Forensic Science Laboratories, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has been assisting them for updating their all round infrastructure of technology and skills to meet the requirements of investigations and detection of crimes.

Police and public order being the State Subject in the scheme of the Constitution of India, the primary duty of crime control is that of the States. However, crimes of inter-state ramifications and international crimes relating to India are dealt with by the Central Government. In such scenario, the state Police and its crime detection machinery assists the Centre.
