The results have embarrassed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president Amit Shah and Union Home minister Rajnath Singh who belongs to UP.
It is being discussed in political circles whether the Modi wave which swept UP in Lok Sabha polls in April/May this year when the BJP won 73 out of total 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, is on the wane.
It would be worth mentioning here that BJP had 10 assembly seats and one was from alliance partner Apna Dal whose president Anupriya Patel had won the Lok Sabha seat. Mainpuri was once again retained by Samajwadi Party which was vacated by Mulayam Singh Yadav who had been elected from Azamgarh also. Now his grand nephew Tej Pratap Singh has won from Mainpuri with huge margin.
BJP could retain only Lucknow East, NOIDA and Saharanpur while it lost in eight assembly and one Lok Sabha seats.
But defeat of BJP in Charkari assembly seat is also a big embarrassment to union minister Uma Bharti as she had won from there in 2012 assembly polls. The voters were upset with her as she never visited her constituency after the polls.
Similarly defeat of Apna Dal from Rohania assembly constituency which is very close to Varanasi is also a setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had won from the Holy City. This means that Modi magic could not work for alliance partner in the constituency very close to PM’s constituency.
According to political analysts, people of state rejected the communal agenda of BJP which tried to polarize the people of Uttar Pradesh on communal lines and issues like love jihad and hate speeches by Yogi Adityanath and Sakshi Maharaj were used to win the elections.
BJP was under the impression that it would be befitted by communal polarization in western UP affected by series of communal violence but people opted for development agenda and rejected the communal appeal.
It would be worth mentioning here that according to reports there had been more than 600 incidents of communal violence in UP since the installation of Modi government at the centre and sixty per cent of those took place near 11 assembly constituencies that went to polls.
CPI national secretary Mr Atul Anjan said that the same people of Uttar Pradesh who were swayed by the communal politics and helped BJP to win more than 70 seats in Lok Sabha elections , wanted peace and development.
Mr Atul Anjan said that people were now looking towards Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to carry on development work and improve on law and order front.
Happy with the performance of his party, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that people voted for the development work of his government and rejected communal agenda of BJP which was banking on communal divide.
The political analysts give credit for this spectacular victory of Samajwadi Party to collective leadership of Mulayam-Akhilesh-Shivpal Yadav to gear up the party organization and state ministers to ensure victory of party candidates.
Although going by past experience, the ruling party gets the maximum benefit in the by-elections but after poor performance in Lok Sabha polls, Mulayam and his team took these elections very seriously to boost the morale of party workers for remaining two and half years of the government in the state and make favourable atmosphere for party for 2017 assembly polls.
BSP did not contest the polls as a strategy but Mayawati had appealed to her party workers and voters to support powerful independents to prevent the shifting of voters to SP or BJP.
Like Lok Sabha polls, the Congress Party could not perform in these by-polls also and candidates miserably failed to woo voters. (IPA)
