The newly found ally of the Congress, which has strong base among the Muslims in Uttar Pradesh has described the encounter as fake and demanded that it should be investigated by elite central agency, the CBI. The issue is likely to figure in the next meeting of the Congress-SP coordination committee, which would meet on October 14, said a senior SP leader.
Meanwhile, SP general secretary Amar Singh today called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding a judicial probe into the Jamia Nagar encounter. He, however, failed to get an assurance from him.
'I raised the issue for a judicial probe with the PM. But as I was not assured anything on it, my party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will raise the issue during the UPA-SP co-ordination committee meeting likely on October 14,' Singh said.
'The media had raised questions on the authenticity of the encounter...I had only suggested that maintaining the Congress tradition, the Home Minister should step down pending a judicial probe,' he said while denying that he ever demanded the resignation of the Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
Singh said SP was concerned about the sense of insecurity gripping the minority community after the Jamia Nagar encounter. 'The attacks on Muslims in Assam and violence against them in Maharashtra has created a sense of insecurity...The SP is concerned about it,' Singh stressed.
He also discussed the issue of attacks on Christians with the National Security Advisor M K Narayanan this morning and demanded an immediate action and full-proof security to the minority community. The SP leader also demanded ban on RSS-backed militant outfit Bajrang Dal.(EON)
