Political observers of Uttar Pradesh feel that the BJP state leaders have become desperate for their electoral success at the state assembly polls in 2017 after getting severe beating in the by elections in the state. Samajwadi Party has expanded its organizational base and in the recent months, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has started showing administrative capability and he has given a big boost to the developmental programmes in the state.

Lot of industries have been set up and leading industrialists of the country have shown their interest in setting up big projects in Uttar Pradesh. The young CM has been able to establish his rapport with the youth of Uttar Pradesh and that has made BJP leaders of the state jittery. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP got massive victory because of the support of the younger generation but now, the Modi magic has waned and the younger people are getting confidence from the promises and actions of the SP Chief Minister. So for the BJP, the development agenda, which the PM Narendra Modi is talking about, has been taken over by the SP chief minister.

BJP leaders now believe that the Hindutva agenda is the only one now which can create a urge like the 1990s and help BJP in winning the state assembly elections. The VHP and the RSS leaders of the state are in favour of this though central BJP leaders feel that this will further alienate the BJP from the younger section who only believe the agenda for development and they gave support to Modi for that in the last Lok Sabha elections. It is to be seen whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central leadership of BJP intervenes in the UP situation and refrain the hardliners from opting for communal action in support of Hindutva agenda.
