FROM SUDHA BHARADWAJ TO RHEA, WOMEN AS ‘ENEMY OF THE STATE’

MEDIA-DRIVEN WITCH-HUNT GOES AGAINST INDIA’S CORE CONSTITUTIONAL VALUES
Annie Domini - 2020-09-10 10:30
The 28-year-old Rhea Chakraborty, actress-girlfriend of the late Sushant Singh Rajput, has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau on charges of drugs consumption, for allegedly buying cannabis for Rajput. Cannabis, or marijuana, also known as weed in common parlance, is a mild psychoactive drug widely used for medicinal purposes, with a gigantic informal market of recreational use. While cannabis is legal in many countries, its status in India is mixed. The production and sale of cannabis resin and flowers banned under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a law which in itself needs considerable reworking. However, NDPS Act allows for the use of leaves and seeds for medicinal purposes, for horticulture and under traditional alternative medicine like Ayurveda, as part of the Hindu religious offering bhang. The arrest of Rhea Chakraborty for simply procuring cannabis for private consumption, is therefore, not just a gross overreaction by the state but stinks of a political framing.

NEW EDUCATION POLICY DISMANTLES DIVERSITY AND DISSENT

HIGHER EDUCATION WILL BE MORE CORPORATISED AND PROFIT-DRIVEN
P Sandosh Kumar - 2020-09-09 11:13
Indian higher education has witnessed tremendous progress since independence. There has been a significant increase in the number of colleges and universities across the country. The Nehruvian consensus believed in providing limitless possibilities of free liberal education that reflects the spirit of reason, tolerance, humanism, dissent and dialogue. Influenced by Gandhian ideals of self-reliance and Marxian philosophy of social justice, Nehru was instrumental in building a pluralistic and secular higher education edifice in post-colonial India. Despite the tribulations and challenges, no one can deny the incredible achievements of India’s higher education sector since independence. India has the third largest higher education system after China and the USA. Our higher education institutions like IIMs, IITs and JNU have already carved their imprints in the global education landscape.
