The High Court of Karnataka through its Order dated June 24, 2020 asked the Government of Karnataka to ensure that compensation is paid to the Migrant workers (hutment dwellers) and to rehabilitate them on account of the destruction of their huts in a fire incident. This Order came while hearing a public interest litigation case in, Karnataka High Court v. State of Karnataka (W.P. 7737/2020), which was initiated suo motu by the court based on a letter addressed to the Chief Justice by Vaishali Hegde, an advocate.
