INDIA’S HIGH COURTS STEPPING UP IS SILVER LINING IN JUDICIAL GLOOM

SUPREME COURT DISREGARDING CONSTITUTIONAL MORALITY NOW ROUTINE
Amritananda Chakravorty - 2020-02-22 15:05
On 19th February, 2020, the Supreme Court Collegium, which decides the appointment of judges to the High Courts and the Supreme Court, recommended the transfer of Justice S. Muralidhar, a noted and upright judge of the Delhi High Court to the Punjab & Haryana High Court. While a big gain to the Punjab & Haryana High Court, it was seen as a considerable loss to the Delhi High Court, and many viewed it as a ‘punitive’ transfer, since Justice Muralidhar had given many significant decisions in recent times, including quashing the transit remand of Gautam Navlakha in the Bhima Koregaon cases in 2018. At the same time, it is important to note that how a fair judge adds value to every High Court, especially the ones in the smaller Courts, not that P&H High Court is a small one.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to double farmers’ income by 2022. But has he drawn up the blueprint for doing so? Has he understood the real problem of the farmers?

NEED FOR IMPROVED ROAD DESIGN TO REDUCE HIGHWAY FATALITIES

TRUCK LOBBY RESISTING IMPROVED ROAD SAFETY REGIME
K Raveendran - 2020-02-22 14:40
The Brihat Mumbai Corporation (BMC) decision to appoint safety auditors to determine design faults in road construction that are mostly responsible for road accidents marks a change of approach to one of the long-neglected aspects of road safety in India. The civic corporation has identified hundreds of ‘black spots’ or accident-prone spots that have been found responsible for a high number of accidents due to poor road design. The new move is to eliminate design flaws causing accidents and execute alterations in the road designs with the help of global consultants.

MONTEK SINGH AHLUWALIA’S BIOGRAPHY OF MANMOHAN SINGH IS A MUST-READ

FORMER PM MADE INDO-US NUCLEAR DEAL HAPPEN DESPITE MASSIVE ODDS
Harhar Swarup - 2020-02-22 14:38
Manmohan Singh’s biography by former Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia reveals many facets of the former Prime Minister’s personality and landmark decisions taken during his ten-year rule. One of the most significant achievements of former PM was the conclusion of the Indo-US nuclear agreement. Manmohan Singh rightly believed that the non-proliferation regime had imposed a ‘nuclear apartheid’ on India and it would be a major long-term gain for ‘our economy’ if we could get these restriction lifted.

TRUMP VISIT IS MEANT TO BOLSTER U.S. INTERESTS

INDIANS HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN FROM THIS MODI SHOW
Binoy Viswam - 2020-02-20 12:26
Donald Trump and Narendra Modi can be rightly termed as birds of the same feather. They share many things in common. Allegiance to corporate capital, hatred towards minorities, contempt for immigrants, preaching of Islamophobia, etc, are their most savoured traits. That is why within no time they became thick friends, both politically and individually. For the first Republic Day celebrations in his second innings of power, Narendra Modi's desire was to invite Donald Trump as the guest of honour. Though he was inclined to accept the invitation Trump was forced to drop it due to pre-occupations at home. That vacuum was filled by Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil. He is also another bird of Modi-Trump feather.
