SUPREME COURT’S ‘MSP’ FOR INDIVIDUAL PRIVACY

BUT THE CRUCIAL QUESTION IS: WILL MODI GOVT LISTEN?
K Raveendran - 2021-02-17 10:50
By no stretch of imagination can it be said that the Supreme Court has fixed a price for the privacy of Indians, least of all an MSP, the bone of contention between the Modi government and the striking farmers. But Chief Justice S A Bobde has given an indicative price, which is higher than the $2-3 billion that social media giant Whatsapp makes from its operations. “…people have grave concerns about their privacy. You may be 2 trillion 3 trillion company. But the privacy of people are more important than your money,” the CJI told the counsel for the social media giant, which is seeking to defend its policy of allowing a lower priority for the privacy of Indian users, compared to that of Europeans.

‘FREEDOM OF SPEECH’ IN INDIA BEING GAGGED

‘JOURNALISTS ON TARGET’ - OFFICIALLY OR OTHERWISE
Gyan Pathak - 2021-02-17 10:47
A defining moment has come. Free speech in India is being gagged through numerous illegal and legal means. At a time when everyone, from an individual to the United Nations, expected the government to end impunity for crime against journalists, the media is finding itself under unprecedented threat, both from the government and their supporters. What is at stake? The profession of journalism. What we are likely to lose? The very ability to remain informed in the age of ‘misinformation and disinformation’ spread online and offline. From where we can get information in all its dimensions if journalists are silenced? From nowhere.

MOST SEDITION CHARGES ARE BROUGHT TO EFFECT SUBMISSION

SILENCING DISSENT WILL MAKE PEOPLE LIVING AS DEAD
Gyan Pathak - 2021-02-16 11:27
Anyone in India against the ruling establishment is under threat of being booked under sedition and put into jail by the government. The spurt in sedition cases under Narendra Modi’s rule has put a large number of people under intimidation who are now avoiding expressing their dissent even on the wrongs committed by the government authorities. It is increasingly being felt that one should keep silent on government’s affairs or else face the consequences, even if one doesn’t commit any crime. People seem to be entirely on sweet will of the government, and any of one’s disagreement or dissent expressed in words or visual imageries can be treated as seditious, as if there is no other appropriate section in the India Penal Code or other laws relating to crime, and that has threatened even the birthrights of a human being.
