The Kerala Government has now been recognised and acclaimed globally, for its adept handling, in treating and in containing the spread of coronavirus in the State. The so called “Kerala Model” is now a matter of international research and study. The efficacy of the Health wing of the State, the capabilities of the Doctors, Medical infrastructure facilities, Educational and social consciousness are cited as reasons, in this success story. Similarly the timely lockdown is stated to be the main reason that helped the State in containment. Kerala Police made this possible; a successful lockdown. The role of Kerala Police, the law and order arm of the Government, has been tremendous, not only in maintaining order in the Society, but into a variety of unknown areas, to bolster the efforts of the State Government.

April 20 is a special for all of us in the All India Bank Employees Association, or AIBEA. It was on this sacred day, 74 years ago, in 1946, that our beloved AIBEA was founded. From a small, tiny bush, today AIBEA has grown into a mighty, strong, assertive, accredited and reputed national trade union organisation. Today, AIBEA is the largest trade union of bank employees both in India and in the entire world.

The world is passing through a very difficult period, a period it ever witnessed in last ten decades. The COVID-19 pandemic has put human life before a life and death question. Starting from China, the said virus had already engulfed the entire globe, and that also without any form of racial, national, religious or class discrimination. The ruling circles of different countries have experienced that the present system of neo-liberal capitalism has failed to rise to this crisis-ridden occasion and thereby has exposed its historical limitations. So, when people world over are struggling for their health, job and livelihood, searching for new world free from the present pandemic, we are observing the 150th birth anniversary of Comrade Lenin.

22 April 2020 is not just a date in calendar. It marks the 150th birth anniversary of V I Lenin. He was one of the greatest theoreticians after Karl Marx. He was an excellent strategist and tactician who led first socialist revolution in 1917 in Russia which is noted as Great October Socialist Revolution. He was the head of the first Socialist Country and founder of Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

April 22, 2020, marks the 150th birth anniversary of the greatest revolutionary figure of the twentieth century, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. After Marx and Engels, Lenin made the biggest contribution to the theory and practice of Marxism. Lenin’s groundbreaking theoretical advances, such as his analysis of imperialism, set the stage for the world’s first socialist revolution in Russia in October 1917. Lenin created a revolutionary strategy that encompassed the industrial proletariat and the peoples of the colonies and oppressed countries. Another aspect of this strategy was the concept of worker- peasant unity. In the sphere of revolutionary practice, Lenin pioneered the role of a revolutionary party organisation as the vanguard of the working class.

Heart-breaking images of migrants trekking home on foot have hit the world headlines, making us weep for our fellow human beings. To be robbed of dignity is to be denied the protective cover of the Preamble to the Constitution of India to which every Indian can lay claim. The Indian economy has been witnessing a slowing down of growth for a long time – to be frank, since the second UPA rule. With the coming to power of the BJP six years ago, the economy started decelerating, first slowly, then it gathered speed. When Arun Jaitley was Finance Minister, he tried his level best to show that the economy was in the pink of health. He would have us believe that there might be problems here and there, but the “basics” of our economy were sound; they were in good health. To achieve this, he started fudging figures, to lull us into a false sense of security that there was nothing to worry about our economy .He forced the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) to play a complicit role. The result was that the CSO lost a good deal of the credibility and reputation that it earlier enjoyed.

Crude oil, once used to be called liquid gold, is plumbing the depths only The Economist had dared to predict. The Economist, London-based magazine founded by 19th century most prominent public intellectual, Walter Bagehot, had written that oil price would slump to $5 per barrel.
