Amulya Ganguli - 2020-03-23 11:26
Jyotiraditya Scindia’s transition to the BJP underlines one of its advantages over Congress. Apart from the BJP’s control over its own members, unlike that of the Congress, the BJP has the ability to exert its influence over politically susceptible individuals and parties even if they do not subscribe wholly to the saffron ideology.

Nantoo Banerjee - 2020-03-23 11:22

The government is under pressure to bring a large number of them back as the Covid-19 has become pandemic.

DEFEATED POLITICAL SYSTEMS

Vijay Sanghvi - 2020-03-23 10:43
Nature has finally proved its superiority. A small germ from the fish market in Wuhan of China was the cause to terrorize entire humanity, its imagined gods, its perceived religions as the ways of life, its rapidly developing science and above all their political might. It all proved to no avail. The super powers had to, alike the least powerful nations had to, direct people to shun their daily routines, all activities outside safety of their homes and avoid contacts with other humans and nature given lives or at least maintain safe distance from others.

The Centre is not admitting that Covid-19 might be in the community spreading phase. Indications are it set out on that journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should seriously rethink his corona-strategy. The government will not lose face. Curiously, the Centre has not ordered a lockdown, but Modi on March 23 asked states to "Strictly enforce lockdown."

WHEN POWER COLLUDES AND DOESN’T SEPARATE: CASE OF RANJAN GOGOI

EX-CJI’S RAJYA SABHA ENTRY MARKS DEMISE OF JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE
Amritananda Chakravorty - 2020-03-21 12:01
On 16th March, 2020, the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, nominated Rajan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha. Though seemingly an innocuous notification, the said notification failed to mention that Rajan Gogoi had retired as the Chief Justice of India merely four months back. Those four lines of the Gazette notification contained the obituary of India’s judicial independence and integrity. Some people may think that this is an exaggeration, but those who have been watching the judicial developments in the last 5-6 years would say that the journey from independent to ‘committed’ judiciary is now complete.

One of the factors being mentioned by neutral observers and a section of media is that Kamal Nath failed to establish rapport with the people in general and politicians of the ruling party, including Ministers and MLAs.
