NEW CITIZENSHIP ACT HAS RADICALLY UPSET INDIA’S SECULAR SOUL

NORTHEAST UNREST, NATIONWIDE PROTESTS GREET MODI-SHAH DIKTAT
Harihar Swarup - 2019-12-14 11:23
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has become law – having sailed through Rajya Sabha comfortably, though the NDA government does not have majority in the upper house; it was already passed by Lok Sabha – alarmingly fast, especially with the President of India’s lightning quick assent turning the Bill into the Act. On face of it, the measure looks quite simple but it is not so. It has evoked country-wide protest, particularly in North-East. The new Citizenship Act opens the path of Indian citizenship for Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis and Jains, feeling persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. However, in this Bill, there is no proposal to touch the citizenship of any Muslim.

The call for meeting was given by Congress MLA Arif Masood. Speakers belonging to several organisations deplored both the measures as divisive which seek to polarise the country on religious and communal basis. The speakers represented All India Secular Forum, Gyan Vigyan Samiti, CPM, CPI etc.

GOVT AND IMA MUST FIGHT SUPERSTITIOUS VIEWS
Dr. Arun Mitra - 2019-12-14 10:49
Interesting statement has been given by the BJP Member of Parliament Shri Ganesh Singh speaking Sanskrit language on a daily basis boosts the nervous system and keeps Diabetes and Cholesterol at bay. Earlier too similar statements have been given by some political leaders. The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in 2014 had said that in ancient times Plastic Surgery in India was so well advanced that head of an elephant could be transplanted on human body. Taking alibi from his statement many of their leaders jumped into fray and started giving similar statements.

GIG ECONOMY OFFERS ALTERNATIVE FOR YOUNG WORKFORCE

MODI GOVT HAS TO TAKE MEASURES TO ENSURE EXPANSION
Nilanjan Banik - 2019-12-14 10:45
Kaushik Banik is a happy person these days. He is a software developer. After toiling hard for months to get a job, he finally found an alternative, thanks to the Upwork, an online digital job platform. His hourly wage rate is $35 dollars. There are millions of others like Kaushik who are now getting benefitted from the advent of digital platforms. At a time, when fewer jobs are getting created in the organized sector (daily, less than 2 per cent Indians who apply for jobs get them), and the economy is slowing down, the silver lining lies in the spread of platform enabled gig economy. In India, it is estimated there are around 3 million gig workers. The number is certainly small if one were to compare it with India’s 500 million workers. However, the good part is an estimated 56 per cent of the new employment is generated by the gig world.

LAW CANNOT BE INTERPRETED WITHOUT KEEPING CONTEXT IN VIEW
K Raveendran - 2019-12-14 10:42
The Supreme Court decision not to entertain the plea by two activist women seeking entry to the restricted Sabarimala temple for the time being and leave it to the larger 7-member bench that is slated to consider the whole gamut of issues relating to religion and faith vis-à-vis constitutional morality can be seen to be consistent with the apex court’s approach in the epoch-making Ayodhya verdict.
