STRONG ANTI-POVERTY PROGRAMMES CAN ONLY END HUNGER

INDIA NEEDS MORE SUPPORT TO DEAL WITH MALNUTRITION
Dr. Arun Mitra - 2019-10-25 11:29
That with a Global Hunger Index (GHI) score 30.3, India is at 102 among 117 countries is a matter of serious concern. We are lowest among the South Asian countries. The countries which fall below us are Sierra Leone, Uganda, Djibouti, Congo Rep., Sudan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Timor-leste, Haiti, Liberia, Zambia, Madagascar, Chad, Yemen Rep. and Central African Republic. Most of these countries are involved in internal or external strife for a long period.

BJP HAS TO FOCUS MORE ON URGENT ECONOMIC ISSUES

ELECTION RESULTS GIVE CLEAR MESSAGE TO MODI-SHAH
Sagarneel Sinha - 2019-10-25 11:27
Although the BJP is going to form the government again both in Haryana and Maharashtra, the voters have given a strong message to the saffron party. The message is — to give more time to other important issues like the dwindling of country's economy, rising unemployment issue and the agricultural crisis. It must be noted that the saffron party in its campaign for both the states heavily banked on strong nationalism — by raising the topic of Article 370 and even attacking Pakistan from the election rallies.

EASE OF DOING BUSINESS RANK OF INDIA IS DECEPTIVE

TWO MOST BADLY PERFORMING AREAS ARE EXCLUDED
Gyan Pathak - 2019-10-25 11:22
India’s moving up 14 places to be ranked 63rd among 190 nations in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2020 report, fails to give a clear picture of the situation prevailing in the country, since the two most important areas among 12 are not included in this report. They are employing workers and contracting with the government indicator sets. Moreover the report is primarily based on assessment of the situations mainly in Delhi and Mumbai (weight given 53 and 47 per cent respectively), ignoring the situation in the rest of the country.

KAMAL NATH GETS A BIG BOOST AFTER JHABUA BY-POLL WIN

BJP’S HOPE OF TOPPLING CONGRESS MINSTRY SHATTERED
L.S. Herdenia - 2019-10-25 10:35
BHOPAL: Result of Jhabua by-election has not only given stability to the Kamal Nath government but has also boosted the morale of the Congress. Almost all the newspapers have commented that it was the biggest Congress victory in the history of the state. The winning leader is Kanti Lal Bhuria, who happens to be veteran tribal leader. For the last forty years he was in active politics. During this period he served in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister and also as member of state ministry headed by Digvijaya Singh. Unfortunately he lost the Lok Sabha election of 2019 and his son Dr. Vikrant Bhuria lost the assembly elections held in 2018.

GAINS AND LOSSES FOR LDF, UDF: SETBACK FOR BJP
P. Sreekumaran - 2019-10-25 10:33
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The result of the five assembly by-elections represents a spectacular victory for the secular ethos of Kerala’s polity. Politics of communalism and casteism has no place in the State, which has set an example which other States will do well to emulate.

BJP’S ‘CONGRESS-MUKT BHARAT’ PROGRAMME GETS A JOLT

PARIVAR HAS TO RETHINK ABOUT MODI’S POLICIES
Arun Srivastava - 2019-10-25 10:31
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be appreciated for putting a brave face and refusing to concede the fact that the BJP has suffered electoral defeat in the states of Maharashtra and Haryana. This stance of Modi has wider implication. Acceptance of defeat would not have changed the ground reality. Instead his denial and eulogising state leaders would prevent the party from having adverse moral impact on the rank and file and demoralising them.

WASHINGTON: With new sanctions just announced, the Trump administration’s effort to roll back the advances in U.S.–Cuba relations achieved toward the end of the Obama administration is going full blast.
