USING FAILURE AS EXCUSE TO CONTINUE FAILED POLICY

SC-ST ACT REVIEW ARGUMENTS NEED MORE PERSUASIVE POWER
K Raveendran - 2019-10-03 12:11
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court has allowed the Modi government’s review petition against the dilution of powers of arrest under the controversial SC-ST Act, which had caused disquiet across a wide spectrum, including the affected class. This had even led to a certain Dalit alienation from the BJP as it was felt that the ruling coalition was not doing enough or was late in its response. To that extent, the latest Supreme Court verdict must gladden the hearts of the saffron elements.

Sankar Ray - 2019-10-01 11:06
To state or assume that as the Prime Minister of India Narendra Damodardas Modi and the maiden speech of the first secretary of Indian mission at the United Nations Bidisha Moitra together edged out the PM of Pakistan Imran Khan Niazi at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in diplomatic duel reflects refusal to recognize the ground reality in the queer arena of international politics that is habitually volatile.

TOTAL U.S. CONTROL OF MIDDLE EAST MAY BE SLIPPING

TRUMP REGIME IS AFRAID OF RECESSION
Conn Hallinan - 2019-10-01 11:04
In many ways, it doesn’t really matter who—Houthis in Yemen? Iranians? Shiites in Iraq?—launched those missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia. Whoever did it changed the rules of the game, and not just in the Middle East. “It’s a moment when offense laps defense, when the strong have reason to fear the weak,” observes military historian Jack Radey.

FESTIVAL SEASON ECONOMY HIT BY SLOWDOWN

SMALL TRADERS, GIG WORKERS FEEL THE BRUNT
B. Sivaraman - 2019-10-01 09:55
Great Indian Festival…Big Billion Days…No, these don’t refer to Diwali and Dussehra or Eid and Christmas. They are the special festival season sales melas by e-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart. As the names aptly capture, these sales festivals earn big billions for these mega corporates. Both festivals began with a bang on 29 September. According to American market research and advisory firm Forrester Research Inc., these two online retail behemoths are expected to clock around $4.8 billion (Rs. 33,912 Crore) in sales through the festival season, lasting for six months from August to January. As the festival season peaks in October-November, these sales melas stretching for around a week would account for 80% of their total festival season sales or about $3.82 billion (Rs. 26,988 crore).

UNDERSTANDING COMMUNIST CHINA ON ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY

HIGH PITCH OF MODERNISATION WITH SOCIAL SHORTCOMINGS
G Venkat Raman - 2019-10-01 09:52
Since my first visit to China as a student nearly two decades ago, I have had several opportunities to go back and observe the remarkable changes occurring within that country. Recently, I supervised an educational tour of student-participants to Shanghai, which is referred by some as 'New York on steroids.' The exercise was designed to expose future Indian business leaders to prescriptive and proscriptive lessons of the Chinese model of economic development and governance. There is a vast scope for complementarity in management education in China and India as local cultural norms governing interpersonal transactions, and social networks play a determinative role in business operations in both countries. Given China's remarkable transformation in the past three decades from an impoverished nation to a hub of global capitalism, there is no better destination for Indian students of business and management seeking to immerse themselves in an alien environment.
