CHINA’S TRADE MARCH AHEAD OF USA

OBAMA IN WARY MOVES ACROSS ASIA
S Sethuraman - 2014-11-12 10:38
A Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP), by no means a new concept, was successfully pushed by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in Beijing on November 11, projecting it as ‘historic’, in a move aimed at countering US-dominant trade moves in the region.

YUAN GETS BIG BOOST AS RESERVE CURRENCY
Anjan Roy - 2014-11-12 10:36
China is riding the crest of its economic success currently. It has taken one more step to make its currency globally traded and thus acceptable. China has announced what is known as the Hong Kong-Shanghai Stocks Connect from November 17. This in effect means off shore trading in the Chinese currency for purchase of stocks in Hong Kong and Shanghai exchanges.

PTI LOSING POLITICAL CREDIBILITY AMONG PAKISTANI PEOPLE

IMRAN KHAN’S DUBIOUS ALLIANCE HAS LITTLE SUPPORT NOW
Sankar Ray - 2014-11-11 11:14
The grim battle waged by a small but well=meaning section in Pakistan for a sustaining and evolving democratic order has suffered a setback as some pseudo-democratic interests are working against the struggle for democracy. Needless to say, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its chief Imran Khan serve as catalyst in favour of the unholy combine of a section of army, the ISI and other powerful groups whose roots are in the military-bureaucratic-feudal traditions. The PTI too is in the service of pseudo-democratic politicians and retired bureaucrats. The ace cricketer-turned-politician’s collaborator is Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), led by Dr Tahirul Qadri.

ARUNACHAL NEEDS DEVELOPMENTAL PUSH

TIME FOR USING HYDEL POWER RESOURCES
Barun Das Gupta - 2014-11-10 11:22
KOLKATA: If one takes the trouble of rummaging through the archives relating to that part of India which is now called Arunachal Pradesh, one will stumble on a shocking document titled “Regulation 2 of 1880. The Assam Frontier Tracts Regulation, 1880.” It begins with the Preamble: “Whereas it is expedient to provide for the removal of certain frontier tracts in Assam inhabited or frequented by barbarous or semi-civilized tribes from the operation of enactments in force therein; it is hereby enacted as follows:”

PROBLEMS GALORE FOR UNITED JANATA DAL

2014 IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM 1977
Amulya Ganguli - 2014-11-10 11:20
The losers have banded together again. Their perseverance is admirable considering that repeated failures of the so-called Third Front or Janata experiment of constituting a non-Congress, non-BJP outfit haven’t dissuaded them. Probably, the success of the first memorable effort in 1977 which saved democracy in India continues to motivate them.

ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS DUE IN THREE STATES

BJP HOPEFUL OF BETTER RESULTS
Harihar Swarup - 2014-11-08 10:52
Another round of crucial Assembly elections are round the corner. While the polls are due in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand in December, in Delhi, where state assembly has been dissolved, the election is slated to be held in January. Doubtless, election in Jammu and Kashmir is of vital importance in the changed scenario. Both the ruling National Conference and the Congress are in bad shape and fortune of Mahbooba Mulft-led PDP is on rise. Upbeat on Modi wave and its victories in Maharashtra and Haryana, the BJP is hopeful of a spectacular show in J&K too. A good voter turnout and an impressive performance by the BJP would radically alter Kashmir’s fortunes.

BETTER LAND CONNECTIVITY WITH ASEAN NEEDED

INDIA MUST IMPROVE ITS ACCESS TO MYANMAR
Ashok B Sharma - 2014-11-07 12:37
In a situation where economies are seeking integration with neighbours in the form of institutional grouping, India has made attempts for engagement with the ASEAN bloc primarily for trade and integration of the economy, more particularly to derive benefit for its remote north-eastern region. But this has not been realised in full potential due to poor land route connectivity despite inking of free trade agreements in goods and services with ASEAN.
