The sentencing of the RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav by five years in prison by the Special CBI Court on Thursday marks a new phase in the political graph of this colourful Lok Sabha member from Bihar. At a time when the RJD was recovering the lost ground in the state, the conviction has come as a great set back to both the RJD and its leader. Lalu would have got away from losing his membership had Rahul Gandhi not put a spoke on the ordinance last week brought by the government to help him.

Lalu might have lost last four General Elections in Bihar after 2004, but he remained the most powerful politician of the state because of his solid MY (Muslim-Yadav) alliance. In the last Bihar Assembly elections, too, his RJD and ally LJP of Ramvilas Paswan had bagged 25 percent of votes polled. With his conviction and disqualification from contesting an election, his RJD is bound to lose its shine.
