It was an impressive win for the US President Barack Obama who will begin his second innings at the White House in January 2013. Americans have preferred continuity than change. He has created history again by defying the undertow of a slow economic recovery and high unemployment to beat his Republican opponent Mitt Romney. Obama became the second Democrat to win a second four-year White House term since World War II.

Unbelievable as it may seem, the registrar of West Bengal University of Health Sciences has filed a special leave petition against the judgement of the High Court of Calcutta High on 28 September in the case of Dr. Amit Banerjee vs State of West Bengal & Ors. (A.S.T. 38 & 39 of 2012) quashing the dismissal of Dr Banerjee as the Vice Chancellor of WBUHS. The dismissal was on the plea that Dr Banerjee failed to join the news within a date, arbitrarily fixed by the department of health and family welfare, Government of West Bengal. He did neither seek approval from nor inform the VC, his controlling authority before filing the SLP.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is, in a way, right. The government spending must be slashed to keep the fiscal deficit under control. And, every ministry needs to act upon it. The latest cut in petroleum subsidy by way of hike in diesel and petrol prices, partial increase in domestic cooking gas prices, imposition of service tax on rail fares from 1st October, etc., are unlikely make much impact on the fiscal deficit.

While expressing 'serious concern' about nuclear “activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device”, IAEA also underlined its efforts in countering nuclear terrorism.
