WASHINGTON: Among all the court cases, scandals, and constitutional crises swirling around convicted felon Donald Trump, the criminal Republican ex-president and now—again—the party’s presidential nominee, let us pause to remember another big constitutional crisis the U.S. faced—Watergate.

WASHINGTON: The vibes have not been this good for a long time. Only two weeks after President Joe Biden’s decision to end his campaign turned the 2024 election on its head, Vice President Kamala Harris has shocked the political establishment by choosing as her running mate Minnesota governor Tim Walz, the most progressive of the handful of names in contention. Walz has a record as governor that anyone on the Left has plenty to be pleased with, from putting in place free, universal school meals and paid family and medical leave to establishing a form of tuition-free public college and beefing up worker protections.

India is faced with an unprecedented political turmoil in Bangladesh after the formidable prime minister for the last fifteen years – Sheikh Hasina Wazed– was forced by the army generals and members of her own security team to leave the country within just 45 minutes. She is now in Delhi, waiting for a green signal from any western country for political asylum. The developments over the last three days in Bangladesh moved at such a rapid pace that even the Indian intelligence had no prior information about the last-minute turn of events. Indian foreign ministry officials are stunned at the suddenness of the events in a neighbouring country, in which successive Indian governments, over the years, invested most in terms of political and economic capital.

What has happened in Bangladesh was inevitable. It is extreme historical irony that Sheikh Hasina had to eventually flee Bangladesh, the country which was literally fathered by her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Hasina, who once helped rescue Bangladesh from military rule and restore the democratic governance, has been primarily responsible for creation of this situation.

Nine days after the presidential elections in Venezuela held on July 28 in which the incumbent president Nicholas Maduro won defeating the candidate of the national opposition, the far right Edmundo Gonzalez, the political situation in the oil rich South American country is still in turmoil with the western countries led by the USA refusing to accept the verdict officially announced by the government’s National Election Council. The US administration and the European Union have not recognized Maduro as the elected president. In fact US state department has said that according to them, the opposition candidate Gonzalez has won and they recognize him as the real President.
