The economy’s strong rebound has been grounded in a proven track record of prudent macroeconomic policies, which also underpinned a successful euro adoption and a recent credit rating upgrade. Moreover, Estonia earned the distinction of being the only EU country with a fiscal surplus in 2010, a feat likely to be repeated in 2011. But coming on the heels of one of the EU’s deepest economic contractions, the recovery has exposed underlying difficulties. Price pressures have emerged (still mainly imported) and unemployment, while declining, remains high with long-term joblessness on the rise.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) today expanded their partnership in support of IMF capacity building in Africa through the exchange of two Contribution Agreements totaling EUR 14.6 million (about US$20 million). The agreements, signed recently, will support the IMF’s Africa Regional Technical Assistance Centers for Eastern (AFRITAC East) and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region (AFRITAC South).

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team led by Mr. Christopher Jarvis visited Belarus during October 5-17. The mission discussed the current economic situation and exchanged views with the authorities on possible next steps in response to their request for a Fund-supported program. The team met with Prime Minister Myasnikovich, the Chair of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus Ms. Ermakova, Deputy Prime Minister Roumas, the Minister of Finance Mr. Kharkovetz, the Minister of the Economy Mr. Snopkov, other senior officials, representatives of banks, independent economists and the diplomatic community.

Tribal welfare in 21st century India is certainly different from 20th century pre-independence and post independence era. This difference has been ushered in by creation of a separate Ministry of Tribal Affair in 1999. However, the core of the problem lies unaddressed as earlier. We plan at the top and expect everyone to fit into it forgetting the ancient wisdom that a coat does not fit all. Whoever does not fit into our plans are compelled to live outside it without proper attention either from governments or society.
