Ghana: Economy projected to expand by about 13 percent

A mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Peter Allum, visited Accra during February 16-March 1, 2011. The mission conducted discussions for the third and fourth reviews under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and for the 2011 Article IV consultations. The mission met with Finance Minister Kwabena Duffuor, Bank of Ghana Governor Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, other senior officials, members of parliament, and representatives of the private sector and civil society organizations.

Large public investment projects in key infrastructures financed by foreign assistance underpin its favorable medium-term growth prospects. Yet gains will prove transitory if a broader agenda of fiscal and structural reforms remains unfinished. Further fiscal and structural reforms are necessary to bolster the economy’s resilience and ensure sustainable growth. The increasing costs of climate change and still large development needs bring challenges to which policy will need to respond.

Himachal Pradesh Annual Plan Finalized at Rs.3300 crores

New Delhi: The Annual Plan for Himachal Pradesh for the year 2008-09 was finalized at a meeting, here, today between the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia and the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal. Plan size for the current year was agreed at Rs.3300 crores.

Slum population expected to touch 93.06 million by 2011

New Delhi: The Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has said, as per estimates of the Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. Pranob Sen, Principal Adviser, Planning Commission (former Secretary, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, and Government of India) the slum population in the country is expected to touch 93.06 million by 2011. The Committee estimated slum population in 2001 at 75.26 million.

13 Counter Insurgency and Anti-Terrorism Schools set up

New Delhi: It has been decided to set up 20 counter Insurgency and Anti terrorist Schools (CIATs) in the states of Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Manipur, Nagaland, West Bengal and Tripura. Out of these, 13 Schools have already been set up and are functional.

National Environment Tribunal could not become functional

New Delhi: The Ministry had earlier proposed to establish a National Environment Tribunal under the National Environment Tribunal, Act 1995. The Act provided for strict liability for damages arising out of any accident while handling any hazardous substance and for providing relief and compensation for damages to persons, property and the environment resulting from such accidents. However, the National Environment Tribunal could not become functional.

Boards of 25 CPSEs do not have Requisite Number of Independent Directors

New Delhi: As per the Clause 49 of the Equity Listing Agreement, all the listed entities including listed Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) are required to appoint requisite number of Independent Directors on their Boards. Where the Chairman of the Board is a non-executive director, at least one-third of the Board should comprise of Independent Directors and in case he is an executive director, at least half of the Board should comprise of Independent Directors.
