EU consulting with members on trade preferences for Pakistan

The European Union reported at the meeting of the Council for Trade in Goods on 31 January 2011 that it was still consulting with some members that have expressed systemic or economic concerns regarding its request for a waiver on trade preferences it would provide to Pakistan to help the country recover from floods last year. It said it would report on the results of these consultations at the next meeting, which is scheduled for 21 March 2011.

Given the still fragile state of the economy and continued large vulnerabilities, notably the dependence on foreign funding, Directors underscored the importance of implementing a consistent medium-term macroeconomic framework that reduces uncertainty and lowers risk spreads.

National Infant Mortality Rate Down to Fifty

New Delhi: As per the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) estimates released by the Registrar General of India (RGI), Ministry of Home Affairs for the year 2009, it is noted that Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped by 3 points from 53 (during 2008) to 50 infants deaths per 1000 live births during 2009. The IMR for rural areas has dropped by 3 points from 58 to 55 infant deaths per 1000 live births.

The uncertain global recovery is adding to the country’s vulnerabilities. In light of the difficult near and medium-term prospects of the economy, Directors emphasized the need for resolute fiscal adjustment and structural reforms. Noting the limited domestic job opportunities, they agreed that the authorities should promote overseas employment opportunities, which would generate income and help reduce poverty.
