New Delhi: A first ever case of human infection with Crimea Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) virus has been reported from Ahmedabad. Tests conducted at National Institute of Virology (ICMR, Pune) have confirmed the presence of CCHF virus in blood as well as urine samples of the patient.

FM Holds Pre Budget Consultations with Finance Ministers of all States and Union Territories

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee held a meeting with Finance Ministers of different States and Union Territories to get their inputs for General Budget 2011-12, here today. This was the seventh such meeting in the series of pre-Budget consultations held by Finance Minister with the stakeholders of different sectors. He held his first meeting on 7th January with the stakeholders of agriculture sector followed by meetings with captains of Indian industry on 11th January, with representatives of different trade unions on 12th January, 2011, with different NGOs on 14th January, 2010, with noted economists on 17th January, 2011 and with banking and financial institutions yesterday i.e., 18th January, 2011.

SIBAL Cosults Stakeholders on National Broadband Plan

New Delhi: Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology emphasized urgent need for finalization of broadband plan including strategy for roll out of optical fibre. The Minister said this while holding consultations with key stakeholders on policy issues related to telecom in a round table conference on the issue here today. The National Broadband Plan including the Optical Fibre Network, as a national resource would be equitably available to all the concerned stakeholders for providing broadband services in non-discriminatory manner, he added.

India’s growth story has now been overshadowed by the spate of globally-noticed scandals, out of which a considerably weakened UPA-II Government is trying to emerge and claim some legitimacy for governance which it had nearly forfeited. But there are continuing political uncertainties and economic challenges, internal and external, to ensuring macro-economic stability. A Cabinet reshuffle, long delayed, appeared to be in the making at the time of writing and it remained to be seen whether it would turn out to be another window-dressing or a real shake-up which could be promising of better governance from now on and help wipe out at least a part of past sins of omission and commission.
