WTO agriculture negotiators agreed on 15 February 2013 to look at how countries handle public stocks, in a series of technical meetings designed to shed light on the implications of a proposal to give developing countries more flexibility in food security policies.

New Delhi: Contrary to the statement made by the Indian Defence Minister AK Antony that AugustaWestland chopper deal would be cancelled if wrongdoings found, the Union Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid said that the “Government is not committing to cancelling the deal just yet.”

Never in the past did the International Labour Organisation do what it is doing now — paying special attention to the two-day strike of 470 million blue and white colour workers in India on 20 and 21 February. Among the reasons are participation of all central trade unions such as the Indian National Trade Union Congress, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, All India Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha and Centre of Indian Trade Unions, the five largest TU centres and the worrisome state of industrial relations that aggravated the plight of the toiling masses.

A rejigging of the current three-tier income-tax apparatus, small tax concession for income up to Rs. 10 lakh, new tax slab for high-income group, selective tax on dividend income, introduction of inheritance tax, tax sop on savings, small changes in excise and customs levies, minor export concessions, further government stake sale in state undertakings (PSUs), simplification of rules for foreign direct investors (FDI), tightening of expenditure and strengthening of tax collection machinery are among the options Union Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram may consider for his 2013-14 budget proposals.
