New York: The UN’s human rights chief will send a team to Tunisia next week to assess the country’s human rights situation amidst recent political unrest, which her office says has so far led to more than 100 deaths.

New Delhi: The Conference on ‘Issues & Challenges for Development of Scheduled Caste Women & Children’ came out with suggestions and recommendations on measures required to reach benefits in full to SC women and children to fulfil the needs, entitlements and rights of survival, protection and empowerment of this marginalised group to have equality with other castes. Adopting a rights-based approach rather than a welfare-oriented one in education, health, housing and living conditions was emphasized. Establishing a common school system with the concept of neighbourhood schools, setting up residential schools for SC children, elimination of discriminatory practices in delivery of health services were some of the other recommendations of the Conference.

New Delhi: National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) celebrated its Raising Day here today. The Union Home Minister, Shri P Chidambaram was the Chief Guest and Shri M Shashidhar Reddy, Vice Chairman, NDMA was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Shri Chidambaram inaugurated an exhibition where various equipment used by NDRF for the purpose of response during floods, Medical First Response/Collapse Structure Search & Rescue (MFR/CSSR), Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Emergencies were displayed. NDRF presented an energetic demonstration on rescue techniques on the occasion. The Union Home Minister appreciated the work done by NDRF.

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee held a meeting with Finance Ministers of different States and Union Territories to get their inputs for General Budget 2011-12, here today. This was the seventh such meeting in the series of pre-Budget consultations held by Finance Minister with the stakeholders of different sectors. He held his first meeting on 7th January with the stakeholders of agriculture sector followed by meetings with captains of Indian industry on 11th January, with representatives of different trade unions on 12th January, 2011, with different NGOs on 14th January, 2010, with noted economists on 17th January, 2011 and with banking and financial institutions yesterday i.e., 18th January, 2011.
