Amending RTI: Government move is dangerous and self-defeating

New Delhi: UPA led Union Government of India, which is presently neck deep in corruption, has been trying to amend the Right to Information Act for quite some time. More recently, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has circulated a suggestion stating if information seeker under this act dies, the concerned file would be closed. If it is accepted, it would further endanger the lives of the petitioners including RTI activists who are already facing all sorts of attacks, including attempts to murder.

The European Union reported at the meeting of the Council for Trade in Goods on 31 January 2011 that it was still consulting with some members that have expressed systemic or economic concerns regarding its request for a waiver on trade preferences it would provide to Pakistan to help the country recover from floods last year. It said it would report on the results of these consultations at the next meeting, which is scheduled for 21 March 2011.
