Macroeconomic performance during the second half of 2009 was satisfactory. Economic growth is estimated to have slowed from 6.2 percent in 2008 to 2.8 percent in 2009 owing to the effects of the global financial and economic crisis on the country. After continuing to decline in August, inflation increased in September and October on account of increases in the money supply and the depreciation of the Congolese franc vis-à-vis the U.S. dollar.

Despite the global financial crisis, economic growth in Côte d'Ivoire accelerated to 3.8 percent in 2009—achieving a positive per capita growth rate for the first time since 1998. Benefiting from abundant rainfall and the rise in world cocoa prices, in particular, agriculture achieved significant progress. Industry and services followed this good dynamic. The general consumer price index declined, reflecting improvements in supply at the national level and in import prices. The external current account shows a sizeable surplus, owing to a substantial improvement in the terms of trade.

At its meeting on 19 March 2010 the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) elected Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah of Nigeria as its new chairman. China stated full compliance with DSB rulings in trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights (TRIPS) case, and the EU announced agreement with Argentina in biotech dispute.
