What next in Jammu and Kashmir? Will the Centre's announcement of the 8-point peace-seeking formula restore the pre-stone pelting phase of normalcy in the strife-torn state? Answers to the questions depend on two things. One, what will be the immediate impact of the formula and in what manner different shades of public opinion react to the Centre's olive branch? Two, will Pakistan's ISI use a new strategy to fan unrest in the Muslim-dominated Valley?

There is certainly some thing queer about our China debate. The great China enigma is no more confined to that country's growth miracle, its new assertiveness or military build-up. Stock market fixers are back again in droves. Like on the last occasion, they all are of overseas origin, from Mauritius, Kayman Island, Isle of Man, St. Kitts, Virgin Islands, Liberia and other tax havens. They have been pumping in billions of dollars into the Indian stock market since early this year. Their 'buy' orders had unilaterally dragged up the Bombay stock exchange's (BSE) 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) to a 32-month high at 20,001.55 on September 21. Local punters are, however, less enthusiastic - cautiously optimistic, in analysts' language - this time about the rising Sensex than they were in January, 2008. Many are considering 'sell' options.
