THE CURIOUS CASE OF 'HINDU TERRORISTS' INVOLVED IN BREACH OF PARLIAMENT'S SECURITY

CENTRAL AGENCIES HAVE TO GO DEEP TO FIND OUT THE REAL REASONS
Sushil Kutty - 2023-12-15 12:18
Parliament attack 'mastermind' Lalit Mohan Jha is in police custody. Four of his underlings – if he is ‘mastermind’, indeed – have been charged with terrorism under various sections of the UAPA, supposedly one of the toughest anti-terror legislations anywhere in the world. Does that mean, Neelam Devi, Sagar Sharma, Manoranjan D., and Anmol Shinde, along with Lalit Mohan Jha, are deemed terrorists and “saffron terror” is god’s own truth, not the figment of some dervish imagination?

BRITAIN IS ‘DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO RECESSION’, TUC WARNS AS GDP FALLS

Ceren Sagir - 2023-12-15 12:07
Britain is “dangerously close to recession,” the TUC warned the Sunak Government as news that the economy shrank in October dealt a blow to one of the Prime Minister’s five priorities. Gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have fallen by 0.3 per cent during the month, down from a 0.2 per cent growth in September, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

NEO-LIBERAL REGIME IN INDIA HAS LED TO INCOME INEQUALITY AND FARMERS DISTRESS

THE CRUX OF ALL RECENT STUDIES IS THAT THE RATIO OF RISE IN PEOPLE UNDER ABSOLUTE POVERTY
Prabhat Patnaik - 2023-12-15 11:35
Neo-liberalism propagates a set of outright falsehoods to present itself in a favourable light compared to the preceding dirigiste regime in India. The basic theme is to suggest that under neo-liberalism there has been such an acceleration of the growth rate of Gross Domestic Product that the people as a whole have become much better off, and vast masses of them have been lifted out of poverty (one particular enthusiast has even claimed that poverty now afflicts only 2 per cent of the population). Of course the dirigiste period was not all milk and honey, and nobody criticised it more trenchantly than the Left; but the claim that neo-liberalism represents an advance over it as far as the people’s living standard is concerned is a preposterous one.

SUPREME COURT VERDICT UPHOLDING ABROGATION OF ARTICLE 370 POSES A THREAT TO FEDERAL PRINCIPLES

CHIEF JUSTICE D Y CHANDRACHUD HAS BELIED THE HOPES THAT HE RAISED AT THE TIME OF JOINING
P. Sudhir - 2023-12-14 12:00
The Supreme Court judgment on the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and the dismantling of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories is an egregious example of the constitutional court capitulating to the misuse of powers by the executive. Four years after the event, the three concurrent judgments of the five-member constitution bench, headed by the chief justice of India, have larger and long-lasting implications that strike at the roots of federalism and states’ rights.

COP28’S AGREED DOCUMENT IS A BUNDLE OF CONTRADICTIONS ON MAJOR ISSUES

AT BEST, THE OUTCOME OF DUBAI SUMMIT IS A PYRRHIC VICTORY AT WORST BODES ILL FOR ALL
Anjan Roy - 2023-12-14 10:56
It was a contradiction in terms. One of the largest producers of fossil fuels, UAE, was hosting the UN talks on limiting use of such fuels to cut down CO2 emissions and thereby help keep earth’s temperature rise within the stipulated 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

GLOBAL MULTILATERAL ORGANISATIONS HAVE BEEN LOSING USEFULNESS AND CREDIBILITY

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION (WHO) IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF INEFFECTIVENESS
Nilanjan Banik - 2023-12-14 10:55
These days the multilateral agencies are increasingly losing their relevance. Take the UN system for example. Despite an overwhelming majority voting in favour of demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, the US blocked it by using its veto power. Interestingly, just a year back, Russia also used its veto power when the majority of the countries were demanding a ceasefire in Ukraine. Critics say the fact that five permanent members – USA, Russia, France, United Kingdom, and China – have the final say on a resolution renders the UN system helpless.
