MAJOR BLOW TO CARBIDE'S VICTIMS

BHOPAL’S UNENDING TRAGEDY
Praful Bidwai - 2010-06-17 07:01
The victims of the world's worst chemical disaster abandoned hope of securing real justice a long time ago. As someone who covered the gas leak at Union Carbide Corporation's pesticides plant in Bhopal from an early stage and has probably written more on the issue than any other journalist, I would put the date at February 1989, when the Indian government reached an atrociously inadequate out-of-court settlement with Carbide for $470 million, totalling no more than UCC's insurance cover plus interest. The Supreme Court put its imprimatur on the deal and extinguished Carbide's liability, civil and criminal, thus shattering the victims' hopes of getting enough compensation to pay even for their medical treatment, leave alone damages for prolonged suffering.

NITISH LOOKING FOR OTHER OPTIONS

BJP MAY LOOSE ANOTHER ALLY
Amulya Ganguli - 2010-06-17 06:57
Nitish Kumar may well be the third major regional leader, after Naveen Patnaik and Mamata Banerjee, to leave the BJP. The signs of the rupture were there even at the time of last year's general election when the Bihar Chief Minister spoke philosophically about his continuance in the NDA. Now, he has been somewhat more categorical as was evident from his cancellation of the dinner meant for the BJP leaders, who were in Patna for their national executive meeting.

INFLATION HAS BECOME A BUGBEAR FOR UPA'S TOP ECONOMISTS

ISSUE OF COMMON MAN’S DAILY WOES CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED
S. Sethuraman - 2010-06-17 06:55
On a day the WPI hit the double digit, 10.16 per cent for May, announced on June 14, a flurry of conflicting signals went out to RBI from economists adorning the high chairs in UPA Government as well as from Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee, lifting the veneer of even the limited autonomy that our central banks are supposed to have.

Tackling the left wing extremism in India

M.Y.Siddiqui - 2010-06-14 12:48
At a time when the UPA-2 Government is contemplating to use Armed Forces, namely Army and Air Force over and above the Central Para Military Forces, assisting State police to combat the Left Wing Extremists in the affected parts of the country, a pertinent question does arise in the minds of the people whether the Government has mandate to use Defence Forces ostensibly for internal security purposes against its own people?

CONFUSION IN CONGRESS OVER SAME-GOTRA MARRIAGE

HOODA GOVT LACKS GUTS TO DEAL WITH KHAP PANCHAYATS
B.K. Chum - 2010-06-14 08:59
Khap panhayats demand for a ban on same-gotra and same-village marriages and their resorting to killing of some of the same-gotra married couples have raised political, social and law and order issues. Politicians who are always on the lookout for issues that could help them enhance their chances of capturing power have lent support to the khaps demand for a ban on the same-gotra marriages. (Curiously those demanding the ban on same-gotra marriages have kept mum on the demand for banning the same-villages marriages. This is perhaps because the same-village marriages are solemnized in their native villages without any hindrance).
