New Delhi: Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan are scheduled to be held in New Delhi on February 25, 2010, tomorrow. However, the meeting of the Foreign Secretaries on February 25 is not a continuation of the Composite Dialogue Process.

Pollution load in Indian rivers increased

New Delhi: The quality of water of the major rivers in the country is subjected to different tests. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) along with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) is monitoring the water quality of different rivers in the country at 810 locations covering 27 states and 6 Union Territories.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presenting her second budget for railways for 2010-11 shifted her focus from outright populism to a new thrust for private sector participation in the expansion of vast rail network and its modernisation, in realising Vision 2020 of 'uniting India through rail'. Predictably she did not revise fares or freight, no matter the need to generate more internal resources for future development. She, however, reduced reservation charges for passengers to Rs.10 for sleeper class and from Rs.40 to Rs.20 for AC classes. She also announced a concession of Rs.100 per wagon for foodgrains and kerosene.

The strength of the recovery in the Republic of the Marshall Islands depends largely on the availability of foreign grants and job creation in the private sector. In view of rising debt-service payments and the expected decline in foreign grants, fiscal consolidation and public sector reforms are of highest priority. Sustaining economic growth over the long term will require broad-based structural reforms to promote private sector development and increase the resilience of the economy to external shocks.
