An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, led by Mr. Xavier Maret, traveled to Mali from March 24 through April 6. The mission met with the Prime Minister, Mr. Modibo Sidibé, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Sanoussi Touré, the Minister of Budget, Mr. Lassiine Bouaré, and several other ministers, as well as senior officials of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and representatives of the parliament, the private sector, the civil society, and the donor community. The mission held discussions for the 2010 Article IV consultation and the fourth review of the program supported by the Fund's Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team, led by Mr. Axel Schimmelpfennig, visited Dushanbe April 7-13, 2010 to continue discussions for the combined first and second reviews under a three-year, SDR 78.3 million (about US$116 million) Extended Credit Facility arrangement with Tajikistan. The IMF mission reached a staff-level agreement with the Tajik authorities on their 2010 program.

After promising a serious public debate on the sensitive issue of breach of citizen privacy and other risks associated with the Unique Identity (UID) project, the government has rushed headlong into it. There hasn't been a proper discussion of the risks even in the Cabinet, leave alone in Parliament or a larger public forum. The public has been stampeded into and delivered to the UID project through the device of the National Population Register (NPR), which itself piggybacks on the just-launched Census 2011 operation. The NPR data will be sent to the UID Authority of India (UIDAI), which after filtering it and weeding out duplication, will issue a 16-digit UID to each person.

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved a ten-fold expansion of the Fund's New Arrangements to Borrow (NAB) and the transformation of the Fund's premier standing credit arrangement into a more flexible and effective tool of crisis management. The NAB will be increased by SDR 333.5 billion (about US$500 billion) to SDR 367.5 billion (about US$550 billion), representing a major increase in the resources available for the Fund's lending to its members.
