BJP has swept mayoral election in Uttar Pradesh by winning all 17 seats, which has heightened the morale and aspirations of Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath and the party’s rank and file who are now aiming at winning all the 80 Lok Sabha seats from the state in 2024 general elections. It is only one part of the political game under which lies the great difficulties which needs careful attention of the BJP leadership, or else they would be playing a losing game. BJP would have to ensure that political parties in opposition remain divided.

The government and the Reserve Bank may disagree, but the way the country’s trade deficits and external debt are rising it may be a matter of time before India goes for another IMF-World Bank bail out. The current indicators on the two counts are hardly comfortable. Take the debt position first. The total debt of the Indian government since the country’s independence till 2014, when the Modi government came to power, was Rs.55 lakh crore. Now, between 2014 and 2023, the total debt has gone up to Rs.155 lakh crore. The per capita debt in this short period under the Modi government increased from Rs.43,000 to Rs.1,09,000. In real terms, India’s per capita net national income (NNI), increased by only about 35 percent from Rs.72,805 in 2014-15 to Rs.98,118 in 2022-23. NNI is an indicator of the total economic activity in a country as defined by the OECD.

What are some of the implications of the Congress’s emphasis and creditable win in Karnataka for national politics? At one level it would be unwise to extrapolate from state to national elections. The logic of these elections is not always aligned. Nevertheless, the Karnataka results has implications for how we understand the evolution of national politics.

India is still home to largest number of child brides in the world, since girls are traditionally considered burden on the family and hence families believe that they are to be married off as soon as possible. Last one and half decades have seen progress, but without additional efforts, the country is most likely to miss the target of eliminating this harmful practice by 2030 under Sustainable Development Goal SDG-5.
