INDIA’S GENDER BUDGETING NOT PERFORMING WELL
2023-04-25 04:54 -India’s gender budgeting, intending to show up the constitutional postulates on gender equality in public budget allocations has not performed well since it was introduced first in 2005-06 by Dr. Man Mohan Singh Union Government. Gender budget aims to reduce the gender gap. Gender budget has been allocated Rs.2.23 lakh crore in the 2023-24 union budgets, which is 2.12 per cent higher than the Revised Estimates of Rs.2.18 lakh crore for 2022-23. However, it is 30 per cent higher compared to 2021-22 Budget Estimates of 1.71 lakh crore. According to the official sources in Finance Ministry, budgetary allocations to schemes benefiting women have gone up by 13 per cent at annualized rate since inception. However, its share in the government expenditures has stayed almost 5 per cent.
