MAJORITY OF INDIAN WORFORCE REELING UNDER POVERTY

MODI GOVERNMENT FAILS IN CREATING DECENT JOBS

Seventy-three per cent of the workforce in India are reeling under poverty in spite of theirs being working for long hours much more than the eight hours a day. Employers do not give them enough wages, which has resulted in 8 per cent of the workforce living in extremely poor condition, 30 per cent in moderately poor and 35 per cent in near poor conditions. Moreover, millions of them do not get their wages in time, but are compelled to work, which the Supreme Court of India has called a modern-day slavery while hearing the Union Government flagship scheme MGNREGA that intended to guarantee employment for rural workers but were being paid even less than minimum wages with payments delayed for months.

It is, therefore, important that social and environmental milieu is conducive and fulfils the criteria of better nutrition, equitable distribution of resources and affordable healthcare facilities. There have to be sufficient conditions to prevent mental health issues. For all this, it is imperative to imbibe and practice democratic values for rapprochement of cultures, freedom of expression, right to dissent and right to demand for better life. But when these conditions are disturbed because of political and economic interests of a few, physical and mental health are bound to suffer.

With 41.4 million disaster displacement in the last decade between 2010 and 2021, India has emerged as the most vulnerable in South Asia, followed by Pakistan with 16.4 million, Bangladesh with 14.1 million, and Nepal with 3.3 million displacements. South Asia, as a whole, accounts for 61.4 million disaster displacements.
