James M Dorsey - 2023-02-15 15:02
This could be India’s decade if it plays its cards right. The subcontinental state is poised to be the next China, even if its path will likely be less straightforward than that of China and more of a Leninist two steps forward, one step backwards.

Why is it that when certain things (for want of a better word) are constitutionally set and there cannot be two ways about it – also no ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’- that such matters are taken to court and the courts, as if this was the first time such a matter had come before them, waste precious court time listening to both sides of the harangue before dismissing the case with the wisdom-laden words “the Constitutional provision is very clear.”

Last Friday, two American leaders who faced would-be coup attempts, US president Joe Biden and Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, met in Washington, DC. Ben Chacko - 2023-02-15 14:31
Twenty years ago on February 16, 2003, two million marched for peace in the biggest protest in British history. The London demonstration formed just one of scores of marches against the US’s stated plan to invade Iraq which maybe mobilised 30 million people worldwide. But this could not prevent the Western powers from starting a full scale war against Iraq next month.

IT DEPARTMENT MUST BE TAKEN TO TASK FOR IGNORING BBC VIOLATIONS ALL THESE YEARS

TIMING OF ACTIONS HAS BECOME A TOOL FOR SUPPRESSING DISSENT UNDER MODI DISPENSATION
K Raveendran - 2023-02-15 13:53
It is no joke that under Indian laws anyone can be hauled up at any time, anywhere, because there are some laws that can be slapped against anyone who the authorities are not well-disposed towards. In fact, these laws have become a tool of repression and reprisal at the hands of the rulers. These range from the law that bans obscenity to the one against acquiring wealth disproportionate to one’s legitimate means.

EXTANT STATUS OF INDIAN PRISONS

M.Y. Siddiqui - 2023-02-15 05:30
Supreme Court of India, in its judgments on various aspects of prison administration, has laid down three binding broad principles for imprisonment and custody. First, a person in prison does not become a non-person. Second, a person in prison is entitled to all human rights within the limitations of imprisonment. Third, there is no justification for aggravating the suffering already inherent in the process of incarceration. Given these binding guiding principles, when we consider prevailing conditions in Indian jails, we find sub-human conditions accompanied by overcrowding, ill treatment of inmates, tortures, and massive corruptions in supply of food, health care and related complements.
