Com. PK Balakrishnan Nair, popularly known as Balan, the erudite librarian at Ajoy Bhavan, the CPI headquarters, passed away in New Delhi on July 20 at a local hospital after a period of illness. He was 82. He had a fall in his house recently and got multiple fractures on his left side, and was being treated in the hospital. He was brought back home but soon his health deteriorated and he died while being taken to the hospital.

Higher education in India has been going out of reach for the poor students of the country due to a range of issues which chiefly includes financial lack of affordability that prevents them to access reading and writing materials and the ever increasing tuition and other fees in educational institutions. Ever since the Modi government came to power in 2014, the policies being implemented in all related sectors are rapidly pushing up the cost year after year. Quality of education is deterioration impacting even those students who are fortunate enough to continue with higher education because their teachers in distress being subjected to injustice inflicted through many policy experiments.

In the 2021 Global Hunger Index (GHI) report, India ranks 101st out of the 116 countries. With a score of 27.5, India falls into the category of serious level of hunger. According to the GHI a rank of ≤ 9.9 is considered to be low, 10.0–19.9 moderate, 20.0–34.9 serious, 35.0–49.9 alarming, ≥ 50.0 extremely alarming. That we are at a serious level of hunger is a cause of concern for us. It requires pro active planning to ensure nutrition to all the citizens.

The rupee breached the 80 level versus the dollar for the first time amidst a widening trade and current account deficit. The continuous decline in the value of the rupee is bound to increase inflationary pressures. This, coupled with already existing inflation and high unemployment, shows how the economy is being mismanaged by the Modi government by its pursuit of pro-big business policies. The wholesale and retail inflation rates have remained continuously high at 15 per cent and 7 per cent respectively. This has resulted in a relentless price rise of all essential commodities, particularly food items. Additionally, the people have been burdened with the ever-rising fuel prices, including the enormous rise in the price of cooking gas cylinders.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh ministers are finding it difficult to function due to powerful bureaucrats who are running the show independently. High profile Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak created storm in UP when he wrote letter to his departmental secretary for health Amit Mohan Prasad and questioned the large scale transfers of doctors in the state. Brijesh Pathak in his letter said that their shortcomings in the departmental transfer and rules of transfer policy were not followed.

Mediation is an alternate dispute resolution (ADR) system outside the traditional court system. In India, this service is presently provided by private ADR or mediation centres, and also through the court annexed mediation centres set up by courts and tribunals. Mediation is a voluntary process that Modi government wanted to change fundamentally and tabled the Meditation Bill, 2021 in the parliament of India that contains numerous loopholes, which is yet another example of this government’s wild approach towards policies and laws.

The BJP government was enthusiastic to adorn the 75th year of independence with a high sounding name. Because of that, the people every day read and hear the term ‘Amritvarsh.’ The word suggests a year in which life would be victorious over death. As it happens with every ceremonious name coined by the BJP, Amritvarsh also is heading in the opposite direction, where death stares at life fiercely. Amritvarsh of India is characterised by unprecedented price hike on all the necessities of life. The people of India find it increasingly difficult to cope up with the shooting prices and their diminishing income. This Amritkaal is meant only for exploiters and looters. The dream of common people to have a decent life has turned into ashes. The wildfire of price rise has eaten away their hopes of life.
