EARLY INDIA-UK FTA PROSPECTS BRIGHTEN WITH RISHI SUNAK BECOMING BRITISH PM

BOTH NEW DELHI AND LONDON HAVE SOME COMPULSIONS TO CONCLUDE AN EARLY DEAL
K R Sudhaman - 2022-10-29 10:37
There is a general euphoria with a PIO Rishi Sunak becoming Prime Minister of United Kingdom. This is natural as India being a vibrant democracy, politics is at its best even on a non-issue. In this, there is some case for celebration with Sunak being a practicing Hindu and for the first time a person of an Indian origin has become Prime Minister of a country which ruled India for nearly two centuries.

STATES ARE LAGGING IN SPENDING FOR DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS IN 2022-23

INDIA’S GDP GROWTH WILL DEPEND LARGELY ON THEIR PERFORMANCE
Harihar Swarup - 2022-10-29 10:34
From a fiscal point of view, the state governments are in a strong position to emerge key drivers of economic growth this year. But while the availability of funds doesn’t appear to be a constraint, surprisingly, actual spending by states so far has been muted. Their ability to ramp up capital expenditure during the remainder of this fiscal 2022-23 , and take advantage of the fiscal space that we believe they have, will be a key determinant of the aggregate fiscal impulse to the economy. This analysis is based on 13 major state governments — Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal — that account for 85% of India’s GDP.

In a meeting of foreign ministers of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries on Thursday, ways to reduce conflict in Myanmar were discussed. The regional block that comprises 10 member countries including Myanmar held its meeting without Myanmar, which has been barred from participating in any high-level ASEAN engagements. TORY PARTY AND ITS BACKERS FAVOUR UNBRIDLED CAPITALIST PRACTICES

ERSTTWHILE BRITISH PM LIZ TRUSS FAILED TO FULFIL THAT PRESCRIPTION
Prabhat Patnaik - 2022-10-28 12:19
The most intriguing question with regard to Liz Truss’ resignation as the prime minister of Britain after a mere 44 days in office is this: what is it about her economic programme that the “market” (read “finance capital”) found unpalatable? At its core after all was tax-cuts for the rich, which the “market” should have lapped up. True, the tax-cuts were to be financed through a fiscal deficit which the “market” generally does not like; but since the fiscal deficit was meant to finance transfers to the rich, and not any direct stimulation of aggregate demand by the State, there should have been little objection from the “market”.
