Human rights collective, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, UP, has been meticulously documenting and putting together reports on the unprecedented theatre of violence against minorities, Dalits and women that is the state of Uttar Pradesh. As India’s most populous and perilous state, led since 2017 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of the BJP, heads to fresh assembly polls, in what seems to be an ugly and vicious electoral campaign by the ruling party and its leaders, the concerned citizens of India have penned a charter of demands seeking justice and accountability from the government. PUCL’s letter on the human rights abuses in UP, under the aegis of Yogi and the array of rightwing leaders fomenting communal tensions in the state, is a hard-hitting wake-up call for everyone anxious about the plight of the marginalized, especially religious minorities, women and Dalits.
