INDIA’S GDP GROWTH BELIES ITS TAX COLLECTION SPURT

GST MOP-UP HITS RECORD DESPITE MODEST ECONOMIC OUTPUT
Nantoo Banerjee - 2022-09-05 13:01
The country’s encouragingly high tax collections — indirect and direct — during the April-June quarter (Q1) of the current fiscal may have more to do with price and profit spurt than any magical growth of its economy and consumption. High wholesale and retail prices of consumables and industrial inputs are choking the growth of several sectors of the economy. The revised GST (goods and service tax) rates, which came into effect from July 18, are harsher at several mass consumption items. This is bound to impact the government’s future indirect tax collection growth and actual economic output.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT OF CONGRESS FOR REINVENTING ITSELF BEFORE 2024 POLLS

GANDHI FAMILY HAS TO ENSURE REAL DEMOCRACY IN THE PARTY TO BE RELEVANT
Harihar Swarup - 2022-09-03 16:08
Congress has seen the exit of many heavy weights over the decades — and survived. It lost socialists in 1948, with Acharya Narendra Dev, Jayaprakash Narayan, and Ram Manohar Lohia walking out to form the socialist party. It saw vertical split in 1969 when Indira Gandhi got the better of the “syndicate” and in 1978 when she worsted the old guards—but it remained the real Congress. However, more recently when Mamata Banerjee broke away to form the Trinamool Congress in 1998, and Jaganmohan Reddy his YSR Congress in 2010 — replacing Congress in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh respectively — the party was hugely weakened. In the last few years, many more have left the Congress for greener pastors to Join the BJP—Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jyotiraditya Scindia, RPN Singh and Jitin Prasad, among others.

GULF SECURITY IN PERIL, WITH OR WITHOUT NUCLEAR DEAL WITH IRAN

FRAGILITY OF TIES BETWEEN MAJOR PLAYERS ADDS TO UNCERTAINTY
James M Dorsey - 2022-09-03 15:49
With the fate hanging in the balance of the 2015 international agreement that curbed Iran’s nuclear program, prospects for greater security and stability in the Middle East are meagre with or without a deal. Undoubtedly, the region will be better off with a revival of the accord from which the United States walked away in 2018 than without a US and Iranian recommitment to the deal.

OUR INDIAN ENGINEERS AND PUBLIC SECTOR SHIP BUILDER CAN TAKE CREDIT FOR INS VIKRANT

QUIBBLING ABOUT WHICH REGIME SINGH OR MODI TOOK THE DECISION MAKES NO SENSE
Sushil Kutty - 2022-09-03 15:45
Is INS Vikrant Indian made? Question modified: Is INS Vikrant made with Indian knowhow? Like the Chinese asking their government whether its aircraft carrier Liaoning, which traces its shipyard to Russia, made with Chinese knowhow? INS Vikrant does not carry a similar foreign baggage. But to say that it is made with indigenous knowhow is to get bogged down in whataboutery, which is what’s been happening for the last 48 hours, ever since the “indigenous aircraft carrier” was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
