PREVENTION OF COMMUNAL VIOLENCE IS A DUTY OF PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIVISTS

MEDICAL DOCTORS BEAR THE BRUNT DURING DISTURBANCES
Dr Arun Mitra - 2021-08-19 11:06
The incident of shouting highly communalized slogans and chanting genocide of Muslims and also that they be thrown out of India by a mob of Hindutva goons with police watching as mute spectator is not a new thing. The difference however is that this incident has happened at Jantar Mantar in proximity to the Parliament. Till date neither the Prime Minister nor the Home Minister have uttered a single word to condemn it. Even in his Independence day speech the Prime Minister took no notice of this. Their silence is intriguing. Encouraged with government’s covert support, an incident of similar type occurred in Kanpur just after three days. In this case the accused got bail in the Police station itself.

CENTRE AND THE STATES NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL CARE
Dr. Gyan Pathak - 2021-08-19 11:04
There seems to be no end to the plight of domestic women workers in India who constitute about 80 per cent of the domestic workforce in the country. Hundreds of thousands of them, after losing even their very low paid jobs of cleaning-sweeping-and-cooking, they are left with no means of livelihood, and thereby have already moved or moving from poverty to extreme poverty and destitution.

AFTER DEBACLE IN AFGHANISTAN, U.S. IS NOT AN ‘INDISPENSABLE’ NATION

PENTAGON RECIPE THROUGH REGIME CHANGE HAS GOT A BIG JOLT
Branko Marcetic - 2021-08-19 11:01
To look at it one way, the Afghanistan War was a great success. If you think of the perpetually grinding US war machine as one great big funnel through which public money is turned into corporate profits, then the war’s more than $2 trillion worth of spending has been a boon for a variety of business interests, from the private military contractors who outnumbered US troops seven to one by the war’s end, to the various companies arming, supplying, equipping, and constructing for the war effort, to the private investors who own the majority of US debt, and have benefited from the more than $500 billion of interest the government has paid on its war borrowing so far.

2005 ACT HAS MADE A GOOD BEGINNING BUT MUCH MORE HAS TO BE DONE
Indira Jaising - 2021-08-19 09:58
The Covid-19 pandemic compels us to look at the human rights issues from a different lens. Regulations which were authoritarian in nature locked down intimate partners in the same shared household.

SHASHI THAROOR ACQUITTAL UNMASKS ARNAB GOSWAMI AND HIS REPUBLIC TV

WILL THE SAFFRONITE TV ANCHOR TENDER APOLOGY FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE?
Sushil Kutty - 2021-08-19 09:56
Everybody except Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami has spoken on the “acquittal” of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in the Sunanda Pushkar death case. The Delhi court found Tharoor no more culpable in his wife’s mysterious death than Arnab Goswami was abettor in the “suicides” of a mother and son in Thane, Maharashtra, for which Arnab Goswami was put in jail, and is these days out on bail.

OPPOSITION HAS FIRMLY DEFENDED PARLIAMENTARY VALUES IN MONSOON SESSION

MODI GOVERNMENT HAS VIOLATED ALL NORMS BY PASSING BILLS WITHOUT DEBATE
Binoy Viswam - 2021-08-19 09:52
A government indebted to the ideology of fascism would have no regard for Parliament and its practices. For namesake they may do lip service to the parliamentary system. In actual terms their intention is to undermine the institutions of democracy, of which Parliament is an inevitable component. The more they talk about parliamentary discussions and debates, the more they attempt to sabotage it from within. The RSS-BJP government has excelled in implementing fascist strategy with its pseudo adherence to Parliament and the debates there. The happenings during the recently concluded monsoon session of the Parliament unveiled these very intentions of the BJP and its government.

AMERICAN DEBACLE IN AFGHANISTAN HAS BIG LESSONS FOR MODI REGIME

OVER DEPENDENCE ON U.S. HAS LED TO ISOLATION OF INDIA IN THE REGION
Prakash Karat - 2021-08-19 09:48
America’s ignominious exit from Afghanistan, the collapse of the Afghan National Army, the fleeing of President Ashraf Ghani and the rapid takeover by the Taliban, have all been stunning developments.

LEGAL STATUS OF TALIBAN REGIME IN AFGHANISTAN IS YET TO BE DECIDED

MANY ISSUES OF PRINCIPLES AND CHARTERS ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS
Mohan V Katarki - 2021-08-18 10:02
Upon the withdrawal of American military forces from the territory of Afghanistan, Kabul has been overrun by Taliban, an insurgent militant Islamist outfit that was biding its time in the mountains of Afghanistan for the last two decades.
